OUR RESPONSE
TO HURRICANES FIONA & IAN
Relief efforts underway in hardest-hit areas of Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, Honduras and Florida after back to back storms affect millions.
In response to Hurricane Fiona, our disaster relief efforts are currently underway in Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic. After the category 4 storm pummeled Puerto Rico in late September, we were on the ground serving families in need within days of the storms passing. The effects of Fiona were widespread— the entire island lost power, and over 500,000 households were without potable water. Floods and mudslides further worsened the situation at hand, causing rivers to overflow and bridges to collapse. The immediate needs of those affected were cleanup, and so we sent teams to do just that. In addition, we helped distribute meals made by our friends Mercy Chefs to those who needed them most. In the second phase of our relief efforts, we donated mattresses to families who lost it all, and provided for sanitation and pest control services for a family whose home was flooded by contaminated water. Our work continues in Puerto Rico, as we are helping families replace their roofs. In the Dominican Republic, so far, we have replaced 2 roofs, and donated a mattress to a family whose home was severely flooded.
The same week that Fiona hit Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic, Honduras was badly affected by floods that washed out homes. We are currently working with our church partners to aid families in their rebuild efforts.
Eleven days after Hurricane Fiona stormed through the Caribbean, Hurricane Ian, a category 4 storm slammed the western coast of Florida. Ian’s fury brought up to 15 feet of storm surge in some areas, and sadly took 147 lives. The devastation we saw in Florida is some of the worst we have ever seen, truly widespread and severe. Since the storm’s passing, we have sent teams to cleanup and rebuild on Pine Island, Bonita Springs, and conducted a medical mission and distribution in Immokalee.
There is so much more to do to help those who were so badly affected by these storms. Will you join us in our efforts? You can do so by: praying for those affected, signing up to volunteer with us, and making a donation here.
